UPDATED!! Wordless Wednesday Interupption - JD is in Surgery....

FH - I apologise to Max for cutting in on his WW photo but I just wanted to let our pals know that I've just come back from the Vets without JD - his paw unexpectedly took a turn for the worse last night and he's been kept in for surgery.

I feel so guilty about my quips about him only limping to try and get round me when he was being told off for being naughty now, but he's done this kind of thing before - he's too bright for his own good sometimes!

He was walking almost perfectly by Monday, he started limping again quite badly last night so we gave him a thorough paw inspection but could not see any reason why he would be in pain again. So we put it down to him possibly overdoing it and irritating the small wound where the grass seed had been. However, this morning he woke up very distressed and the entire inside of his front left leg was swollen and puffy - there was obviously a lot of fluid in there.

We got him to the Vet as soon as we could and they wanted to sedate him immediately to either drain or cut away whatever it is that is bothering him - it might not actually be a grass seed, the fact that we fished one out of his paw a few days earlier might actually turn out to be totally unconnected. They're going to try and
carry this out under local anaesthetic but it will depend how distressed he gets - apparently most dogs need to have general anaesthetic for this sort of procedure.

So I signed the consent forms and left the Vets one dog down. Poor Max has been searching the house for him since we got back. I know it's not as if he's having a paw amputated or as if he's got anything seriously wrong with him, but this is the first time one of my boys has had anything wrong with them that I haven't been able to fix myself and I hate that. But
I suppose, as a relatively new dog owner, I'm gonna need to get used to this kind of thing.

I wanted to share this news with our pals and ask you to send some good vibes our way - poor JD does have a sensitive stomach and I'm a bit worried about the effects the anaesthetic might have on him. I'll update this post as soon as we have more news from the Vets - in the meantime here is a cute photo of the boys to keep you all going....

Synchronisity!

**UPDATE**

FH - Hi everyone, thank you for your good wishes and positive vibes. JD is now back from the Vets, curled up on his favourite spot on the sofa - he'll probably sleep for the rest of the evening. He has three stitches in his paw and ALL his paws have been shaved by the Vet, as requested by us. They pulled a HUGE grass dart out of his paw - it had gone under his paw-pad and had been festering and (cover your ears and eyes Miss Mayzie!) had even sprouted a few blades of grass - ewwww! No wonder he was in pain, poor boy.

JD dreams about turning into a blade of grass!!

He needs to go back next Friday to have his stitches removed and our main problem will be to stop Max from nibbling his stitches! As soon as his stitches are out we're going to get both of the boys a 'nudie' cut. They were cut and groomed just two weeks ago, but in this hot weather their fur seems to be growing so fast you can almost see it getting longer in front of your eyes!

A very poorly paw indeed!

JD meanwhile seemed to have a nice time at the Vets - he came out with rice in his woozle as they'd even given him a light meal of boiled rice and chicken! All the nurses there were cooing over him and I think he was actually quite disappointed to be leaving!!

I know of dogs that have sadly lost their hearing and eyesight because of these pesky grass seeds so all in all I'm quite thankful that my poor boy 'only' had one in his paw. I still feel like a lousy owner for not spotting it though.....sigh!

Oh, FH! I'm so very very sorry to hear about poor little JD's paw! Mom says to tell you she knows how scary something like this is and how helpless you feel. And you shouldn't feel the least bit guilty, especially since we can't really tell our humans what's going on with us.

We are sending you and JD and Max lots of loving snuggles and warm wishes for sweet JD's speedy recovery.

Get well wiggles from me and lots of hugs from my mom!

Clare,

My thoughts are with you and JD. Don't fret over being what you could have done as long as he's being taken care of now that is all that matters.

Like human parents we learn with experience, don't be hard on yourself. I'm sure he will be fine but no matter how small the procedure is we will always worry about our babies.

So sorry for not being in touch, with the holiday we took to Maine, my being a bit sick and my internet at home being out it's been a challenge.

Please give Max a big hug and a kiss for me, I'm sure he is concerned... As for JD's belly, please ask the vet if baby food would be a good thing to give him after his surgery. Usually when they are put under their belly is even more delicate.

All the best,

love

Claudia

Poor JD!! That must've felt so uncomfortable for him! We're glad he's getting the help he needs to get better. I'm sure the surgery will come through just fine. It's always hard having your little ones at the hospital not in your care. We'll be sending some healing poodle vibes his way.

We are so pleased to see that JD has come through his surgery well and he is back home with you.
Those grass seeds are terrible I have heard of lots of animals having problems with them.
Hope he is running around as usual tomorrow.

where did the grass seed came from?

OMD my poor boy JD, do you need me to come there and nurse you back to health? I shall find a way my dear! Oh my oh my I am so worried! We are so happy that your trip to the vet went well. I send you all my kisses and licks for healing.

Mom says what about booties for running in during the bad grass season? Maybe the boys could get used to the booties slowly and they would actually like wearing them.

Mom also says to FH, DON'T worry, you did NOTHING wrong!

We will keep JD in our thoughts and prayers and also hope that Max calms down and worries less now that JD is home.

woo woos, Tessa

Don't beat yourself up. You can't catch everything. Poor Kendra had an abscessed tooth and never acted any differently. Who knew?

Glad JD's on the mend and had such a good time at the vet's. Watch those grass seeds!

Oh no - I can't believe I missed everything again!! Stupid time zone difference - means I'm asleep when it's your day and vice versa!

Anyway, so sorry to be late again with the 'good vibes' but am so happy & relieved to hear that JD is back home and they found out what was wrong with the paw...can't believe the grass seed had actually sprouted new blades?!?!

You poor thing - you must have all been so worried. But don't blame yourself or feel guilty - I think you did everything a sensible, responsible owner would have - ther's no point overreacting either and it IS known for dogs to "act up" following an injury (I have personally known dogs who learnt to limp for attention after an injury) so I think you were perfectly within your rights to be sceptical! :-) But you acted quickly enough when you suspected worse so that's all that matters.

Anyway, glad it all seems to be over - poor JD! - can't believe something so little can cause so much grief!!

Sending lots of hugs & healing slobbers,

Hsin-Yi & Honey the Great Dane

JD - I'm SO glad that you're home and resting. I can't believes you almost grew into a blade of grass! Your FH did the right thing bringing you in to the v-e-t! Give her lots of thank you snuggles. Max would much prefer zoomies with you than zoomies with grass. ;) Can't wait until you're back to your usual silly self!

Please don't beat yourself up - it was just an unfortunate accident. You did what you thought he needed last week and now you have fixed him all up.

We will cross our paws for a good recovery. Can you try him with a cone or bitenot collar to keep him away from the stitches? Mom will say some prayers for him too.

Now go take a big deep sigh of relief and relax.

Hi JD,

I hope you are feeling better soon. I also had surgery on my front paw and kept mum busy trying to stop me licking it when I didn't wear the cone, but you learn these things get you lots of extra attention from your family plus special treats and toys to keep you distracted from your paw, so it's not all bad.

Woofs,
Riley

Yuh, we doggies try to be brave even when we have an owie. I know you are feeling much better now because I already read your cone head post. But you will need to do whatever mom says for a while. OK?

Oh no poor JD grass-seed! It does sound quite terrible for such a tiny seed. Growing into his paw, my woozle that sounds bad!

FH please don't blame yourself, we schnauzers can find tons of trouble to get into even in the most innocent of places. Keeping up with 2 active schnauzer lads will surely keep you guessing!

We know we're late, but still sending healing vibes.

My mom person appreciates all of your messages of love and support whilst she has been sick. She liked looking over in the hosptial and seeing the schnauzer notebook you sent and remembering me & JD & Max and all of our blogging friends!
